cell phones are hot in 2009, their stocks are way down

WHY is it that everybody at work owns the latest cell phone, notwithstanding that they pay that bill before they pay their rent--God forbid they should lose service--never mind the roof over their head.Even in this economy, my impression is that the last thing they would give up was their cell phone.Thus I investigated the stocks of the companies that make the following phones or mobile devices: nokia,rim blackberry,hp ipaq,samsung,sony,microsoft,motorola,at&t,verizon,palm,sanyo,lg,helio. AND lo-and-behold, their stock prices have been crushed, massacred even.WILL SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME?
